The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of the most iconic trekking experiences in Darjeeling, offering breathtaking Himalayan landscapes just a few hours away from the city. The trail winds through remote mountain paths, forested ridges, and peaceful Himalayan villages, creating the feeling of being completely immersed in nature far away from civilization.
Connecting the beautiful Himalayan regions of Nepal and India, the Singalila Ridge is best known for leading trekkers to Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal, situated at an elevation of approximately 11929 ft above sea level.
One of the biggest highlights of the trek is the incredible panoramic mountain view from Sandakphu. During sunrise, trekkers can witness spectacular views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu standing magnificently across the Himalayan skyline. Few places in the world offer such a remarkable view of four of the five highest mountains on Earth in a single frame.
The trek passes through the beautiful Singalila National Park, one of India’s most scenic trekking regions known for its forests, wildlife, mountain scenery, and peaceful atmosphere. The trail begins from Manebhanjan and gradually ascends through lush green hills, dense forests, and open ridges before reaching scenic Himalayan settlements such as Tumling and Kalipokhri.
As the journey progresses from Sandakphu towards Phalut, the Himalayan views continue to remain spectacular throughout the route. The landscapes become more open and dramatic, offering uninterrupted views of snow-covered mountain peaks and vast alpine surroundings. At Phalut, trekkers stay in a traditional trekkers’ hut surrounded by panoramic Himalayan scenery.
The descent from Phalut continues through the picturesque villages of Gorkhey and Timburey before eventually returning towards Darjeeling. Along the route, trekkers experience the charm of remote Himalayan life, beautiful valleys, and peaceful mountain trails.
One of the most memorable aspects of the Singalila Ridge Trek is the stay experience itself. Except for Phalut, most overnight stays take place in local teahouses and homestays run by nearby families. These stays offer a chance to experience the warmth, hospitality, food, and culture of the Himalayan communities living in the region. In villages like Timburey, trekkers can also learn to prepare traditional local dishes such as momos, adding a unique cultural touch to the overall journey.
