About this tour

Overview:

The Doodhpathri–Tosamaidan Trek is one of Kashmir’s most underrated and breathtaking Himalayan adventures, offering an extraordinary blend of untouched meadows, alpine lakes, glacier-fed rivers, and vast mountain valleys. Hidden away from mainstream tourist routes, this trek unveils the raw and peaceful beauty of Kashmir in its purest form.

Located approximately 55 km from Srinagar, the trek takes adventurers deep into the pristine wilderness beneath the towering Pir Panjal Range. Flowing gracefully through the valley is the beautiful Shaliganga River, whose crystal-clear waters accompany trekkers along much of the route before leading towards its origin near the magnificent Ashtar Glacier.

The landscapes along the trail are truly mesmerizing — endless rolling meadows, dense forests, flower-covered grasslands, alpine rivers, and dramatic mountain ridges stretch across the horizon, creating scenery that feels almost surreal. Kashmir’s famous meadows reveal some of their finest forms on this trek, making every section visually unforgettable.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the trek is the presence of seven stunning alpine lakes scattered across the valleys and high-altitude meadows. Among them, the serene Gurwansar Lake stands out as a spectacular camping destination, surrounded by peaceful mountain landscapes and crystal-clear waters reflecting the sky above.

The journey also passes through the enchanting valleys of Guruwansar, Pamsar, Bodsar, and Gadtar — each offering unique grasslands, alpine terrain, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery. These valleys remain largely untouched, adding to the sense of remoteness and adventure throughout the trek.

Tosamaidan itself is known for its massive open meadows that appear almost dreamlike in their scale and beauty, while the untouched wilderness of the Ashtar Valley adds a mystical charm to the entire experience.

Once inaccessible to outsiders, this hidden part of Kashmir has only recently opened to trekkers, allowing travelers to explore its pristine forests, secluded valleys, alpine lakes, and remote mountain landscapes for the very first time.

The Doodhpathri–Tosamaidan Trek is more than just a trekking experience — it is a journey through one of the most untouched and peaceful corners of the Himalayas, perfectly embodying why Kashmir is often called “Paradise on Earth.”

On this day, we commence our ascent toward the next campsite, embracing the rhythm of our established routine. Our day begins with the soft chime of an early wake-up call at 6 am, followed by a nourishing breakfast at 7 am, and departure from the campsite promptly by 8 am. This early start allows us to evade the oppressive midday heat, ensuring we reach our next destination with ample time to relax and acclimatize. Before we set forth, the trek leader will provide a brief orientation, offering insight into the day's journey. A packed lunch will be provided at Diskal, our resting point before continuing on. As we trek through the Ashtar Valley, a breathtaking expanse nestled at the foot of Mt. Tatakoti, you will be surrounded by the awe-inspiring Pir Panjal Range, where Tatakoti reigns as the highest peak. As we traverse the valley, you may catch a glimpse of the Shali Ganga River flowing gracefully through the landscape, eventually joining the Doodh Ganga River near Wathoora. The river originates from the Ashtar Glacier, visible to your right as we progress through the valley. In the month of July, the valley comes alive with a vibrant carpet of yellow and red blooms. Upon arrival at the campsite, you will have the opportunity to unwind and savor a refreshing cup of evening tea accompanied by light snacks. The day unfolds much like the previous one, beginning with a 6 am wake-up call, followed by breakfast at 7 am, and departure from the campsite by 8 am. This early start ensures we avoid the midday heat, reach the next campsite promptly, and have ample time for rest and acclimatization. After breakfast, your trek leader will provide a brief briefing before we set out on the day's journey. A packed lunch will be provided to fuel us throughout today’s trek. While the trek to Gurwansar Lake is relatively easy, the gradual yet lengthy ascents can be somewhat tiring. Along the way, you'll pass through lush meadows and cross several rivers, all surrounded by dense pine forests—truly a sight to behold. This section of the trek is also an excellent opportunity to spot a variety of birds, including the Golden Oriole, and witness shepherds guiding their flocks of sheep and lambs. As we climb, we’ll enter the cloud cover, offering a surreal and ethereal experience. As we approach the lake, snow patches may begin to appear, depending on the time of year. Gurwansar Lake itself lies nestled in the heart of a meadow. In May, the meadow is adorned with vibrant floral blooms, especially Irish flowers, while a stream flows from the lake, cutting through the valley and creating a picturesque scene. In winter, the lake freezes over. To the right, you'll be treated to a sweeping panoramic view of the Ashtar Valley we’ve crossed to reach this tranquil destination. We will camp by the lakeside tonight, surrounded by a rich variety of herbs such as Saussurea costus, Taraxacum officinale, and Rheum Emodi. This campsite offers an enchanting setting to relax and take in its beauty. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into camp, where we'll be greeted with evening tea and snacks, followed by a warm, comforting soup. As the day comes to a close, we’ll enjoy a hearty dinner, with a sweet treat to conclude the evening on a delicious note.

Today, we embark on our journey with the same familiar routine: a wake-up call at 6 a.m., breakfast at 7 a.m., and departure from the campsite by 8 a.m. This early start allows us to beat the heat of the midday sun, ensuring we arrive at the next campsite in good time to unwind and properly acclimatize. Before setting off, a packed lunch will be provided to sustain you throughout the day’s trek. The route from Gurwansar campsite to Duriem spans 9 kilometers, and given the distance and the moderate difficulty of the trail, we will begin our trek as early as possible. The path will lead you along the western slope of Gurwansar Lake, passing through Pamsar Lake on the way to Duriem. Roughly 20 minutes into the trek, you will encounter a bouldered section, which adds an exhilarating touch of adventure to the journey. However, this section requires a fair level of fitness and agility, as some of the rocks may be loose and could disrupt your balance. Take care as you navigate the boulders, and after a gradual ascent, Pamsar Lake will reveal itself. The lake, vast in size, will not be immediately visible in its entirety, but as you approach, its beauty gradually unfolds. The tranquil ambiance surrounding the lake offers a perfect opportunity to pause and reflect in peaceful solitude before continuing the trek. From the lake, the ascent continues up a ridge towards Duriem. The route involves crossing another boulder section before reaching a ledge, from where you will continue climbing until you reach the ridge’s summit. Once atop, you will begin your descent towards Duriem. Before reaching the campsite, a refreshing stream crossing awaits, a welcome respite after a challenging day of trekking. Upon crossing the stream, we will set up camp. At the campsite, you’ll be greeted with a cup of evening tea accompanied by snacks, followed by a comforting bowl of soup. Dinner will be served, concluding with a delightful sweet treat to end the day. After such a long and rewarding day, be sure to rest well and recharge for tomorrow’s adventures.

As is customary, our day begins with the gentle chime of a 6 a.m. wake-up call, followed by a nourishing breakfast at 7 a.m., and we’ll set off from the campsite by 8 a.m. After breakfast, your trek leader will provide a brief overview of the day’s adventure, preparing you for what promises to be a day full of both challenge and wonder. Today, we’ll embark on a journey that introduces not one, but five breathtaking lakes, each a jewel nestled among the peaks. We commence the day early, as we begin our ascent toward the first lake. The trail takes us upwards for approximately 2.5 km, leading us to a junction where we leave the main trail behind. From here, we begin our trek toward the Bodhsar Lake viewpoint, which lies about half a kilometer to the left. Standing at this vantage point, you’ll have an expansive view of the Duriem campsite below, along with the shimmering waters of Tratsar Lake—also known as Lokutsar Lake. As the mountains whisper their timeless wisdom, we’re reminded of a famous saying: "The mountains are calling, and I must go." It is here, amidst nature’s grandeur, that the soul truly awakens. After savoring the stunning panorama, we return to the point where our journey toward Bodhsar Lake began. Now, our path shifts, leading us through a boulder-strewn section that soon steepens. This challenging ascent continues for about a kilometer, eventually revealing a flat ridge that offers an awe-inspiring view of the lakes ahead. This scenic haven allows us to pause and appreciate the vastness of the landscape, the serene waters reflecting the grandeur of the surrounding peaks. After a moment to drink in the beauty, we descend from the ridge, only to begin another ascent that will lead us to the elusive Damamsar Lake. The highest point of this ridge reveals a sweeping bird’s-eye view, not just of Damamsar Lake, but also of the twin Navkansar I and II lakes. It is a sight so captivating that it lingers in the memory long after the moment has passed. These lakes, born from the melting snow that crowns the towering mountains, are nature’s art in its purest form. As we linger here, allowing the magnificence to settle in our hearts, we’ll begin our descent toward the Gadtar campsite. The trek through this picturesque valley will lead us to the serene Gadtar Campsite, a peaceful retreat nestled in the embrace of nature. Once there, we’ll be greeted with a soothing cup of tea and snacks, followed by a warm, comforting soup. The evening culminates with a hearty dinner, and to finish the day on a sweet note, a delectable dessert awaits, a perfect close to this unforgettable journey.

Along the route, trekkers encounter several stream crossings while traversing alternating ascents and descents through the vast alpine landscapes of Kashmir. As the climb progresses, the trail maintains a relatively steady altitude while approaching the ridge top, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and meadows. From the summit section, the route descends towards another river crossing before continuing along a winding muddy trail that eventually leads into the breathtaking Tosamaidan region. The landscapes here are truly mesmerizing — endless green meadows stretch across the horizon beneath the towering peaks of the Pir Panjal Range, creating one of the most spectacular alpine vistas in Kashmir. The serene beauty of the valley offers the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and absorb the incredible journey through the mountains. After a brief ascent of nearly 200 m, the trail bends sharply and gradually descends towards the road head. From the road head, a scenic drive of approximately 80 km takes trekkers back to Srinagar in nearly 3 hours, marking the conclusion of an unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
