The Vishansar & Krishansar Lake Trek is a breathtaking journey through the pristine landscapes of the Kashmir Valley, offering trekkers an unforgettable blend of alpine lakes, lush meadows, dramatic mountain scenery, and peaceful Himalayan wilderness.
Located in the Ganderbal District, this moderate-level trek is ideal for trekkers seeking both adventure and tranquility amidst nature. The journey usually begins from the picturesque town of Sonamarg, famously known as the “Meadow of Gold.” Surrounded by towering mountains and rolling meadows, Sonamarg serves as the perfect gateway into the alpine landscapes of Kashmir.
The trail gradually winds through dense pine forests, flower-filled meadows, sparkling streams, and cascading waterfalls, offering breathtaking scenery at every step. Throughout the journey, trekkers are constantly accompanied by panoramic views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks and untouched valleys that define the beauty of Kashmir.
The biggest highlights of the trek are the twin alpine lakes — Vishansar and Krishansar — situated at an altitude of approximately 3700 m above sea level. The crystal-clear waters of Vishansar Lake beautifully reflect the surrounding mountains, creating postcard-perfect scenery. A short distance away lies the equally mesmerizing Krishansar Lake, known for its peaceful atmosphere and untouched beauty.
The surrounding landscapes are adorned with vibrant wildflowers, rolling grasslands, and alpine terrain, making the region incredibly scenic during the summer months. Trekkers may also spot Himalayan wildlife such as marmots, colorful mountain birds, and occasionally even signs of elusive high-altitude animals.
The trek also offers a cultural experience through encounters with the traditional Gujar and Bakarwal communities — nomadic shepherd tribes who migrate through these high-altitude pastures during summer. Their simple lifestyle and warm hospitality add a unique human connection to the Himalayan experience.
Best undertaken between June and September, the trek remains accessible and visually stunning during these months. Though moderately challenging, the well-defined trails and gradual ascents make it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers with basic fitness and proper acclimatization.
Camping beside the serene alpine lakes under a sky full of stars remains one of the most unforgettable experiences of the trek. Peaceful, scenic, and deeply immersive, the Vishansar–Krishansar Trek is a perfect escape into the untouched beauty of the Kashmir Himalayas.
The journey begins with a pick-up from Srinagar at 12 noon, followed by a scenic drive to Sonamarg, located 80 km away, which takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. Sonamarg, situated at an elevation of 2,740 meters (8,990 feet), is known for its mesmerizing landscapes, lush meadows, and snow-capped peaks. As you drive alongside the Sind River, enjoy the stunning views of the Sind Valley, framed by towering mountains. Upon arrival at the camp in Shutkadi, Sonamarg, you will settle in and be greeted with a Welcome Drink (Kehwa). After getting comfortable, you will embark on a short 1-hour acclimatization walk to help your body adjust to the altitude. The evening will include tea with snacks, a warm soup, and a delightful dinner, topped off with a sweet dish to end the day on a high note.
Today marks the beginning of your ascent towards the next campsite as you set out carrying your backpack into the stunning alpine landscapes of Kashmir. The day starts early with a wake-up call at 6 AM, followed by breakfast at 7 AM and departure from the campsite by 8 AM. Starting early helps avoid the midday heat, allows better acclimatization, and ensures enough time to rest upon reaching the campsite. Before beginning the trek, your trek leader will conduct a short briefing about the route and safety guidelines for the day. Packed lunch will be provided at Shutkadi before departure. The trail begins with a steady ascent, and shortly afterward, trekkers pass a military checkpoint where a routine identity verification takes place. It is advisable to keep your Aadhaar card or passport easily accessible in your daypack. The process generally takes around an hour. As the climb continues, the first major viewpoint reached is Tabletop — a breathtaking plateau surrounded by dense forests and dramatic Himalayan landscapes. From here, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the entire Sonamarg region along with magnificent mountain peaks such as Lesser Thajwas, Greater Thajwas, Umbrella Peak, Kazim Peak, Vale Head, Cathedral Peak, and the iconic Amarnath Peak. The beautiful Zabnar Meadow also comes into view, adding to the grandeur of the landscape. The trail then enters the peaceful birch forests of Shokdari, offering cool shade and a refreshing atmosphere. During autumn, this section transforms into a stunning golden forest, making it one of the most scenic stretches of the trek. Beyond Shokdari, the route opens into a wide alpine valley where the views become increasingly dramatic. The trek continues alongside the beautiful Nichnai Nallah, with towering mountains rising all around the valley. Along the way, trekkers encounter small stream crossings and rocky sections, where experienced guides assist in safely navigating the terrain. The trail passes through forests of maple, birch, and pine before gradually approaching the Nichnai campsite. Today’s trek covers approximately 10 km and usually takes around 6–7 hours to complete. Upon arrival at the campsite, settle into the peaceful mountain surroundings and enjoy evening tea with snacks. As the temperature drops, warm soup and a hearty dinner are served, followed by dessert to conclude the day. On clear nights, the skies above Nichnai offer spectacular stargazing opportunities, making for a magical Himalayan evening beneath countless stars.
The day begins with the usual trekking routine — a wake-up call at 6 AM, breakfast at 7 AM, and departure from the campsite by 8 AM. Starting early allows trekkers to avoid the midday heat, reach the next campsite comfortably, and acclimatize better to the increasing altitude. After breakfast, your trek leader will conduct a short briefing about the day’s route and terrain. Packed lunch will also be provided before beginning the trek. Today’s highlight is the crossing of the majestic Nichnai Pass, situated at an elevation of approximately 4100 m above sea level. This is the first major mountain pass of the trek and remains covered in snow until around mid-July, adding both beauty and adventure to the journey. The trail towards the pass passes through expansive alpine meadows, vibrant wildflower fields, and breathtaking mountain landscapes. During the summer months, the valleys bloom with colorful Himalayan flowers that contrast beautifully against the snow patches and green meadows. The gradual climb to Nichnai Pass is both challenging and rewarding, with spectacular panoramic views unfolding at every step. Upon reaching the pass, trekkers are greeted with stunning views of the beautiful Vishansar Valley spread out below. After crossing the pass, the trail descends into the serene Vishansar Valley, known for its pristine alpine beauty and peaceful surroundings. The campsite is located beside a river fed by the crystal-clear waters of Vishansar Lake and Krishansar Lake. These lakes are famous for their abundance of brown and rainbow trout and contribute to the formation of the Raman Nallah, a tributary that eventually drains into the Kishanganga River. The valley is surrounded by towering mountains, lush grasslands, and untouched wilderness, making it one of the most scenic campsites of the trek. Along the route, trekkers often encounter large herds of sheep grazing peacefully in the meadows, as these alpine pastures serve as summer grazing grounds for local shepherd communities. Today’s trek covers approximately 13 km and usually takes around 6 hours to complete. Upon reaching the campsite, relax amidst the stunning Himalayan surroundings and enjoy evening tea with snacks, followed by warm soup and a hearty dinner with dessert to conclude another memorable day in the mountains.

The lake’s peaceful atmosphere, combined with reflections of the surrounding mountains on the still water, creates an incredibly serene and picturesque setting. After spending time exploring and soaking in the beauty of the lakes, the trek retraces its path back through the stunning Vishansar Valley and over Nichnai Pass before descending towards the Nichnai campsite. The descent from the pass offers spectacular views of the surrounding valleys, meadows, and snow-covered peaks. A lunch halt is taken along the trail, allowing trekkers to rest and recharge amidst the peaceful Himalayan surroundings.
