Arunachal Pradesh is a land that leaves a lasting impression on every traveler who steps into its untouched wilderness. Hidden within the far northeastern Himalayas, the state is known for its remote valleys, dense forests, snow-covered mountains, roaring rivers, and deeply rooted tribal cultures. Its raw and unspoiled beauty offers an experience unlike anywhere else in India.
Among its many hidden adventures lies the remarkable Monpa Trail Trek — a journey that perfectly blends nature, culture, and adventure. The trail passes through the spectacular regions west of the Kameng River, including the beautiful mountain towns of Bomdila and Tawang, home to the warm and hospitable Monpa Tribe — a Buddhist community known for its rich traditions and peaceful way of life.
The trek takes you through dense forests, high mountain trails, remote villages, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. Along the way, trekkers experience the quiet beauty of untouched nature while also connecting with the local culture through conversations, shared stories, and warm tea sessions with villagers and fellow travelers.
With its mix of adventure, serenity, and cultural immersion, the Monpa Trail Trek offers a truly unforgettable Himalayan experience deep within the hidden beauty of Arunachal Pradesh.
Our journey begins upon arriving in Guwahati, from where we drive towards the scenic Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The route gradually leaves behind the bustling cityscape and winds through lush forests, river valleys, and picturesque mountain roads towards Tezpur. Further ahead lies Bhalukpong, a beautiful border town situated along the boundary of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, approximately 60 km from Tezpur. The drive alongside the flowing Kameng River offers breathtaking views of dense forests, misty hills, and untouched landscapes that define the natural beauty of the region. Bhalukpong also serves as an important entry point into Arunachal Pradesh and houses the official state check post for permits and registrations. Upon arrival, trekkers settle into a guest house near the riverside town and spend the evening exploring the peaceful surroundings and local culture of Bhalukpong. The calm atmosphere and scenic beauty make it a perfect introduction to the adventure that awaits deeper in the mountains.
Due to the high-altitude mountain roads and unpredictable weather conditions, we begin our journey early in the morning to avoid delays caused by fog or sudden weather changes. As we leave Bhalukpong behind, the roads steadily ascend into the Eastern Himalayas, winding through dense forests and mist-covered valleys. The drive is incredibly scenic, with lush greenery lining both sides of the mountain roads and the flowing Kameng River accompanying parts of the journey. Along the route, we pass several Indian Army camps as we make our way towards the peaceful mountain town of Dirang. En route, we also cross the beautiful hill town of Bomdila, known for its charming mountain architecture, flowing streams, and serene Himalayan atmosphere. Surrounded by misty slopes and forests, Bomdila offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in the region. From Dirang, we take a diversion near Munna Camp and continue towards our final destination for the day — Lagaam. The road to Lagaam is largely unpaved and rugged, adding a sense of adventure to the drive. Nestled amidst dense forests and untouched wilderness, Lagaam serves as a stunning campsite beneath the clear Himalayan night sky, offering a perfect setting before the trek into the Eastern Himalayas begins.
We begin the day’s trek through the dense green forests of Arunachal Pradesh, following a serene mountain trail surrounded by untouched Himalayan wilderness. The peaceful atmosphere, cool mountain air, and thick forest cover make the journey incredibly refreshing and immersive. After trekking steadily for a few hours, we arrive at the beautiful region of Chander, which also serves as an optional starting point for the trek due to its motorable road access. This route is primarily used by local villagers and Indian Army vehicles, though occasional trekkers also pass through it. Beyond Chander, the trail becomes comparatively gentler and wider. As we continue higher into the mountains, distant views of Lagaam, Pangma, and Thembang remain visible across the valleys. The route is beautifully lined with colorful Tibetan prayer flags symbolizing peace, compassion, wisdom, and strength, adding a deeply spiritual charm to the trek. Soon, we reach Thungri, our campsite for the night. Apart from serving as a trekking campsite, Thungri is also used by locals as a summer grazing ground for livestock. Surrounded by vast Himalayan landscapes and cold mountain winds, the campsite offers stunning panoramic views and a truly peaceful atmosphere. As temperatures drop sharply after sunset, trekkers can enjoy a warm dinner before retiring into their tents for a restful night amidst the serene beauty of the Eastern Himalayas.
We continue our trek through the dense green forests of Arunachal Pradesh, surrounded by peaceful Himalayan wilderness and refreshing mountain air. The trail remains scenic throughout, with thick forests, quiet valleys, and occasional clearings offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. After a few hours of gradual ascent, we arrive at Chander, a beautiful mountain region that also serves as an optional starting point for the trek due to its motorable road access. The route here is commonly used by local villagers and Indian Army vehicles, while occasional trekkers also begin their journey from this point. Beyond Chander, the trail becomes broader and more comfortable. Along the way, distant views of Lagaam, Pangma, and Thembang can still be seen across the valleys. The route is beautifully decorated with colorful Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the mountain winds, symbolizing peace, wisdom, compassion, and strength. Soon, we reach Thungri, the first major campsite of the trek and a summer grazing ground used by local communities. Surrounded by vast Himalayan landscapes and dense forests, the campsite offers a peaceful atmosphere and stunning mountain scenery. As night falls, temperatures begin to drop significantly. After dinner, trekkers can relax inside their tents and rest well for the next day’s journey deeper into the Eastern Himalayas.
Today’s trek from Chander to the beautiful Sangti Valley is mostly downhill and offers a completely different landscape compared to the previous days of trekking.
The trail descends through lush green forests, terraced hillside fields, and small mountain settlements scattered across the valleys. Though certain sections can be steep, the route remains incredibly scenic and culturally immersive.
Along the way, trekkers get the opportunity to interact with local villagers, experience the peaceful mountain lifestyle, and spend time amidst the charming Himalayan settlements that define this region of Arunachal Pradesh.
As the trail gradually descends towards the riverside road below, the journey offers beautiful valley views and a refreshing change in terrain. Upon completing the trek, we drive back to Dirang, where trekkers can relax and unwind at the guesthouse before continuing the journey ahead.
We begin the day with an early drive towards Bomdila, a charming Himalayan hill town nestled amidst the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. The journey takes around 6 to 7 hours and passes through scenic valleys, dense forests, and winding mountain roads.
Having briefly crossed Bomdila earlier during the trek, today offers an opportunity to truly experience the beauty and culture of this peaceful town. Surrounded by misty hills and traditional Himalayan architecture, Bomdila is known for its serene atmosphere and strong Buddhist influence.
The day is spent exploring beautiful monasteries, experiencing the local Buddhist culture, and wandering through the quiet mountain streets of the town. Trekkers can also enjoy authentic local cuisine and interact with the warm and welcoming people of the region, gaining a deeper understanding of the traditions and lifestyle of the Eastern Himalayas.
An overnight stay in Bomdila allows trekkers to relax and soak in the peaceful charm of this beautiful mountain town.
On the final day of our journey through the Eastern Himalayas, we drive back to Guwahati, bringing the memorable Monpa Trail Trek to a close. Since the drive takes approximately 8 hours, we begin early in the morning to ensure a comfortable journey through the mountain roads and valleys.
As we descend from the Himalayan landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh towards the plains of Assam, the route once again offers beautiful views of forests, rivers, and mist-covered hills.
We reach Guwahati by evening, just in time to witness the peaceful sunset over the city after days spent amidst remote mountain trails and untouched wilderness. The remaining time can be spent relaxing, exploring the city, and sharing memories with fellow trekkers before finally bidding farewell to the adventure and the friendships formed along the way.
We unequivocally suggest putting aside an additional day for this trek. Deferrals are regular amid street travel in Arunachal Pradesh. The additional day can likewise be used for a short climb from Thungri towards Changla, climate and different conditions allowing.
If you are someone who likes to explore the natural terrains and can stay without leisures of the cityscape, then this trek is for you. Also, if you are someone who has minimal prior experience in mountain climbing, then this trek is a good choice. You just need to have good physical health and a positive attitude at times of adverse circumstances.
You'll be getting on the glaciated and uneven way, on the high elevations for more often than not. Acclimatization is one of the requirements in these sorts of treks. Additionally, the climate can turn awful, as a result of snow-topped mountains and that is the reason the schedule incorporates an extra day for any sort of possibility.
The average temperature ranges from 5 to 15 degree Celcius in the winter season.
