Nestled amidst the scenic hills of the Raigad district near Karjat, Bhivgad Fort is a charming and relatively lesser-known trekking destination in Maharashtra. Also referred to as Bhimgad or Bheemgad Fort, this hill fort offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and adventure, making it an ideal getaway for beginners, families, and nature enthusiasts.
Located at an elevation of approximately 850 feet above sea level, Bhivgad Fort offers beautiful views of the surrounding valleys, lush landscapes, and neighboring hill ranges. Despite its proximity to Mumbai and Pune, the fort remains relatively unexplored, allowing trekkers to enjoy a peaceful and less crowded experience.
While detailed historical records about Bhivgad Fort are scarce, historians believe that the fort may have been constructed during the Satavahana period and later served as a strategic watchtower overlooking the surrounding trade routes and settlements. Its location provided a commanding view of the region, making it an important vantage point for surveillance and defense.
The fort extends along a north-south ridge and occupies an area of approximately four acres at the summit. Although much of the original structure has weathered over time, several remnants still offer fascinating insights into its past.
The trek to Bhivgad Fort typically begins from the village of Gaurkamat. Along the route, trekkers encounter ancient rock-cut steps carved directly into the hillside, believed to have formed part of the fort’s original entrance pathway.
One of the most intriguing features of the fort is a series of rock-cut caves located along the ridge. These caves showcase evidence of early craftsmanship, including carved frames on the cave walls and fascinating sculptures depicting human and animal figures. Another partially excavated cave further adds to the historical intrigue of the site.
Surrounded by greenery during the monsoon and offering pleasant weather throughout much of the year, Bhivgad Fort Trek combines scenic beauty, archaeological remnants, and an easy-to-moderate trekking experience, making it a rewarding destination for both history lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend adventure or an opportunity to explore one of Maharashtra’s hidden historical treasures, Bhivgad Fort promises a memorable experience amidst the beauty of the Sahyadris.
